Envoy: Iran's Military Gift to Lebanon Ready for Delivery

Source : http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13930716001476

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Ambassador to Beirut Mohammad Fatahali announced that Tehran's military gift to Lebanon is ready to be presented to the friendly Arab state.

Fathali made the remarks after a meeting with Lebanese Democratic Party Leader Talal Arslan, where he expressed the hope that the gift would be sent to the Lebanese army through legal procedures in the Muslim Arab state, the Egyptian al-Bawaba news reported.

The envoy did not reveal details or the nature of the aid, but said the gift would help Lebanon meet all its Army needs  in its current war on terrorism.

Iran hopes the weapons can support Lebanon in its fight against the terrorist groups, he reiterated.

Last week, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani announced that Iran plans to gift a military tool or weapon to the Lebanese army in the near future.

"The gift will be sent in the near future and it will be delivered to the Lebanese defense minister during his upcoming visit to Iran," Shamkhani said after meeting Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam in Beirut last Tuesday.

A few days later, senior officials in Beirut said Iran had presented a list of military tools and weapons to be gifted to the Lebanese army to help the Arab country in its fight against terrorism.

Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Samir Moqbel told the country's al-Manar TV on Friday night that he would visit Iran at the head of a high-ranking military delegation within the next ten days to study Tehran's pledged arms aids to Lebanon.

"The details of the arms aids which Tehran is ready to supply to the Lebanese army will be studied in the presence of a delegation of high-ranking officers," he added.

Moqbel said that the Lebanese army will assess and study Iran's weaponry proposals after returning to Beirut.

He expressed the hope that other countries would also present Beirut arms gifts proportionate to the needs of the Lebanese army.

Last Wednesday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian announced Tehran's plans to assist the Lebanese army in fighting terrorism.

"The Lebanese army should be strengthened for its campaign against terrorism," Amir Abdollahian told FNA.

"Any assistance by Iran to the Lebanese army will be within the framework of war on terrorism and the international laws," he added.

Asked about the US officials' reaction to Iran's possible assistance to the Lebanese army, Amir Abdollahian said, "Instead of adventurous measures which merely intensify extremism, the US should avoid preventing reinvigoration of the regional states and armies if it favors a materialization of real and effective war on terrorism."

America’s “Game” of Wars and Interventions

Source : http://journal-neo.org/2014/09/25

Since at least the end of the Second World War, the US has been directly and indirectly fostering, aiding, funding and training fighting militias and groups in different regions of the world to further its own interests. However, the irony of this policy is that in most of the cases, the US ended up fighting, in the name of establishing peace, these very forces of destruction. History is replete with such examples. As the ‘sole’ super power of the world, it has actually been fighting the war of its own survival, that is, to continue to survive as the ‘sole’ super power. As such, not only does it ‘invent’ enemies, but also reasons to fight them. Let’s have a look at some of these ‘invented’ wars.

A number of examples can be given from history to justify this proposition. For example, the emergence of the Taliban is most directly the result of the CIA’s involvement in the Soviet-Afghan War. Not only did CIA provide all possible funding, but also established camps across Pakistan-Afghan border which were extensively used to train people to do “Jihad” against the Soviet Union. And, the fact that the Americans joyfully disseminate information about different aspects of this war in the form of Hollywood movies shows the extent of acknowledgement the US has publicly made regarding once supporting the Taliban when they were hailed and glorified as the “defenders” of the “free world.” Given that, now it looks remarkably amazing how that very Taliban later on turned into enemies and dragged the US into the longest war of its history.

Nothing can explain this fundamental transition except the fact that the US first needed the Taliban to use them against its cold war rival, and then to use, as a pretext to go to war, the Taliban’s refusal to allow the US a free way to build oil and gas pipelines from the Central Asia to the India Ocean. The force that the US once ‘proudly’ created thus turned into the most pernicious enemy of the world—hence the war against “terrorism.” In other words, the most important reason of this longest war is nothing but the US’ own created group of fighters.

On the other hand, the US could still have ‘invented’ any reason to launch attack on Afghanistan even if the Taliban had not refused to accept American plans; after all, extensive militarization of the entire region around Afghanistan was, and still is, one of the cardinal policy objectives of the US’ twenty-first century grand strategy. The fact that the US wanted to militarize the entire region in order for controlling the flow of energy from here to many parts of the world becomes quite evident when we look at the very location of the key military bases of the US in Afghanistan. All of the key bases have been built on the proposed route of the TAPI pipeline.

Similar kind of things took place in Africa where the US first sponsored “rebels” to fight against the Qaddafi regime in Libya and then the same “rebels” started to threaten the US’ and its allies’ interests in Africa, particularly in Mali—hence, the French led attack on Mali in 2013. Contrary to the official propaganda narrative of the US and its allies, the “terrorists” in Mali were, until a few months earlier, the US’ frontline allies in Libya.

As a matter of fact, according to some of the very credible published material in the Western media, militancy in Mali is a direct result of the US’ and its allies’ own policies. For example, Jeremy Kennan(Professor at University of London) reported in one of his articles about the shadowy ties that link the ‘fundamentalist forces’ across the North Africa to Algeria, the U.S. and the Gulf states. The facts presented in such other reports show that the catastrophe now being played out in Mali, as also in Africa at large, is basically an inevitable outcome of the way in which the Global War on Terror has been inserted into the Sahara-Sahel by the US, in concert with Algerian intelligence operatives, since at least 2002.

According to a report of the New York Times, which uncovers the truth about the presence of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) in Mali, much of the instability in Mali is a direct outcome of the US led NATO intervention in Libya. The report highlights a very crucial fact of the mechanisms of the US’ geo-politics. According to the said report, it was the (US-backed) “heavily armed, battle-hardened Islamist fighters who returned from combat in Libya and played the precipitating role in the collapse of the US-supported central government in Mali.” Similarly, according to a report of the Guardian, Al-Qaeda itself does not as such exist in Mali. As a matter of fact, the so-called AQIM is a successor of an Algerian Islamist group, (a product of Algerian civil war) which is only using the brand “al-Qaeda”, and which is further being imposed by the West for propaganda. This militant group was smashed by the Algerian authorities, and most of its leadership is, in fact, Algerian. And, now after having been ousted from Mali, they are again challenging the Algerian government.

The fact of the matter is that it was neither AQIM nor the Tuaregs, but the US trained military officers of the Malian army, who actually overthrew the Malian government because of the latter’s inability to address the Tuareg problem, leading to instability and eventually to intervention of the West. The so-called defection of the Malian army can also be explained with reference to the US led intervention in Libya when we take into account the fact that Tuaregs – who traditionally hailed from northern Mali – made up a large portion of his army, and when Gaddafi was ejected from power, they returned to their homeland and joined the local armed resistance. Thus intervention in Libya precipitated the Malian crisis, the latter being the consequence of the former, as later on acknowledged by the UK’ Foreign Secretary William Hague himself.

Let’s now have a look at the crisis going on in Iraq. Much like the Libya-Mali case, the crisis in Iraq are deeply linked, notwithstanding the US’ own long war with Iraq, to the wider regional problem. The phenomenon of the ISIS, which was deliberately and most fervently ‘mothered’ by the US and its allies in the Middle East, has now all of a sudden gone rogue, causing a massive ‘threat’ to the US and its allied Kingdoms. However, a look at the circumstances preceding the emergence of the ISIS in the current form would suffice to show that the ISIS is also, like Afghan Taliban and fighters in Libya-Mali, a ‘child’ of the US’ geo-politics.

It is a bitter irony that until recently the rebels of the Islamic State were glorified and heralded by the West as Syria’s “opposition freedom fighters” committed to “restoring democracy” and unseating the “brutal” government of Bashar al Assad. Evidences presented and collected by certain Israeli Intelligence sources has sufficiently revealed that a number of US allies in the Middle East did take part in the recruitment, training and funding of the “jihadists” of the ISIS; and, these fighters of the ISIS, along with Al-Nusra front, had previously been the linchpin of the Western strategy to defeat the Syrian Army on ground. According to a report of London’s Daily Express, the most important source of ISIS financing, to date, has been the support coming out of the Gulf States, primarily Saudi Arabia but also Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. It is quite surprising to note that even such reports fail to mention the role of the US in channeling this support.

Undoubtedly, the crisis in Iraq has paved the way for the US intervention; however, this is not the end of the story. As a part of its favourite “game” of wars, the US is again backing the Saudi government to create another Jihadist organization to counter the ISIS in Iraq and Syria. As a part of the understanding reached between Saudia and the US, the former is to host a training facility for thousands of Syrian rebel fighters who are combating both the Islamic State and President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. In simple words, the chief architects of the ISIS are now, in order to conceal their true intentions and purposes, coming up with something new that would help them perpetuate chaos in order to maintain their own monopoly over the region’s Oil. The allies from Europe have, precisely for ensuring smooth supply of oil, been supporting every move engineered by the US and Saudia.

While all these actions are being undertaken under the banner of the “Global War on Terrorism”, the US has no real intention of targeting the ISIS’ terror brigades which are being systematically integrated by the Western Special Forces and intelligence operatives. In fact, the only meaningful and effective campaign against the ISIS terrorists is being waged by the Syrian army itself, which also happens to be the target of the US geo-politics.

Given that the US and its allies are at the helm of the ISIS even after the latter has occupied a large swath of territory, it becomes quite obvious that the actual purpose of this on-going “game” of war is perpetual destabilization of both Iraq and Syria, as also of other possible targets, such as Iran. The “Sunni” outlook of the ISIS is sufficient to understand that after Iraq and Syria—the two “Shia” states in the Middle East—Iran could possibly be the next target; and therefore, the government of Israel has not even opposed the ISIS’ expansion.

Such “games” of war are not and have never been waged to establish “peace” as is claimed by the so-called ‘democratic’ US and the West; rather their real aim is to eliminate all forces that stand in their way of maintaining hegemony in the world. From Asia to Africa, the “game” of wars is supposed to lead to one end: unchallenged politico-economic and military supremacy of the US and its allies. Nowhere in this “game” do ‘humane considerations’ find any reasonable space. The rhetoric of “peace and development” is only for the masses to digest to make them believe that the war is to “end all wars.” This, however, remains only a myth when it comes to ground realities where every “war on terrorism” sows seeds of a new “war,” just like stages of any game, where every stage leads to another stage, to another level.

US Drone Crashes in Syria

Source : http://english.farsnews.com

TEHRAN (FNA)- A communication tower was damaged after a US drone crashed into it in the Syrian province of Raqqa on Tuesday.

According to eyewitnesses, a US drone crashed into a communication tower in Raqqa, a city in North central Syria, on Tuesday morning, Yahoo News reported.

The United States and several Persian Gulf Arab allies launched air and missile strikes on the strongholds of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) Takfiri group in Syria on Tuesday.

"US army and partner nation forces are undertaking military action against ISIL terrorists in Syria using a mix of fighter, bomber and Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles," Pentagon Spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby said in a statement on Monday night.

"Head of US Central Command General Lloyd Austin decided to launch airstrikes inside Syria under authorization granted (to) him by the commander-in-chief (President Barack Obama)," he added.

Syria had earlier warned Washington against carrying out airstrikes on the ISIL terrorists in Syria without Damascus’ consent.

China plans nuclear submarines near US coast, miltary bases in South China Sea

Source : http://chinadailymail.com

The following is based on translations from Chinese media:

So far there has been no news about Chinese nuclear submarine cruising near the US. There has been official confirmation from China that a Chinese nuclear submarine operated in the Indian Ocean for a short period of time.

US nuclear submarine commander Benjamin Person (transliteration from Chinese) recently laughed at China, saying that Chinese nuclear submarines had never been active near the United States. He is happy that his nuclear submarine has been active in the seas near China for a long time.

This qianzhan.com article comments on Person’s words, saying that China obviously lags behind the US, but it has been making great efforts to catch up. China has established a coastal anti-submarine network and improved and upgraded the equipment of its anti-submarine aircraft and warships.

Such efforts will soon effectively deter the activities of US nuclear submarines in the East China Sea but not the South China Sea as the latter is vast in area and complicated under water. However China’s reclamation in key areas in the South China Sea will enable China to set up naval and air bases for anti-submarine aircrafts and warships to contain US nuclear submarines. Therefore, the article believes that US nuclear submarines will not be able to cruise freely in the East and South China Seas for much longer.

The article says that when China’s new nuclear submarines have been commissioned and communication technology improved, Chinese nuclear submarines will be able to operate near the US.

Contributor’s note: My post in early August mentioned Japanese Yumiuri Shimbun’s report that a nuclear submarine of the Chinese navy successfully launched a new-type JL-3 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) in the Atlantic Ocean in late July. The missile hit its target in a desert in Xinjiang. That test proves that China’s strategic nuclear submarine can hit anywhere in the United States with its JL-3 SLBMs. Therefore, I believe it is not necessary for a Chinese strategic nuclear submarines to cruise near the US to make American people nervous.

On the other hand, what the qianzhan.com article says about keeping US attack nuclear submarines away from East and South China Seas is in fact senseless. As most major Chinese cities are located near Chinese coast, US attack nuclear submarines can hit those cities with theirTomahawk cruise missiles even if they are not in the seas near China. The missile has a range of 2,800 km. Chinese coast cities remain vulnerable to US attack even if US submarines are not in the East or South China Sea.

China has to make hard efforts to obtain the capabilities of fighting its enemy far away from its coasts to avoid damages to its homeland. That is the common views of Chinese generals.

Russia to Supply T-90S Tanks to Peru in Medium-Term: Rosoboronexport

Source : RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, September 20 (RIA Novosti) - Peru is interested in a supply of Russian T-90S tanks, but plans are currently considered a medium-term project, Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport deputy general director Sergei Goreslavsky has told RIA Novosti during the exhibition, Africa Aerospace and Defence 2014.

"In collaboration with Uralvagonzavod,Rosoboronexport is working hard to promote the T -90S. This project continues to be the focus of Peruvian leaders, but is has earned a medium-term due to a number of political circumstances, such as the upcoming presidential elections," said Goreslavsky.

Peru's Ministry of Defense announced the possibility of buying some 140 T-90S tanks in the future after receiving prototypes of the Russian battle tank for trials in May of 2013 in Lima. Peru currently uses 300 AMX-13 French light tanks in addition to 300 obsolete Soviet-made T-55 tanks.

Though the T-90S trials have proved successful, a contract to supply the tanks to Peru has not yet been signed.

According to Goreslavsky, the Peruvian leadership is focused on the project with aims of establishing production of the Russian Kamaz trucks, including military versions, which can potentially be used for civilian purposes.

The modified T-90S is fitted with an increased power multi-fuel 1,130-h.p. diesel engine, giving the vehicle a top speed of over 60 km/h (37 miles per hour) on roads and up to 45 km/h on rough terrain, according to its manufacturer, Uralvagonzavod .

The 46.5 ton tank's redesigned turret features a modernized 125-mm gun fitted with an autoloader, capable of firing 9M119M missiles, new fire control, navigation and communications systems, and a remotely-controlled mounted 7.62-mm machine gun. It has a crew of three, who are protected by explosive reactive armor and an NBC protection system.

The Africa Aerospace and Defence 2014 exhibition is being held in the South African capital of Pretoria from September 17 to 21. Rosoboronexport is one of many exhibitors participating in the premier exhibition of air, sea and land technologies.

Chinese Warships Berth in Iran in the Southern port city of Bandar Abbas

Source : http://english.farsnews.com

TEHRAN (FNA)- A detachment of China's fleet of warships docked in Iran's territorial waters in the Southern port city of Bandar Abbas on Saturday.

It is the first time that a Chinese flotilla has sailed and berthed in Iran's territorial waters.

An Iranian flotilla was in the Sea of China last year to deliver Iran's message of peace and friendship to the Chinese.

In May, 2013, the Iranian warships docked in Zhangjiagang after a 13,000-kilometer voyage in 40 days as part of their mission to convey Iran's message of peace and friendship to the East Asian states.

Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said that presence in the Indian and Pacific oceans and the China Sea, patrolling Southeast Asia's strategic Strait of Malacca, crossing the Equator, docking at China's port city of Zhangjiagang port and identifying 370 surface and subsurface vessel units were among the important tasks carried out by the fleet.

The Iranian warships also docked in Sri Lanka after their successful mission in the Pacific Ocean and crossing the Equator.

The visit by the Chinese Navy ships also came a few days after the timely presence and action of the Iranian Navy's 31st Flotilla thwarted an attack by eight pirate speed boats, equipped with various light and semi-heavy weapons, on a Chinese container-carrier ship in the waters of the Gulf of Aden, and forced the pirates to flee the scene.

The Chinese ship was traveling en route from Singapore to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, before it came under pirates' attack.

The Chinese ship continued its voyage after it was rescued by the Iranian Navy.

The 31st Fleet of the Iranian Navy, comprised of Bayandor destroyer and Bandar Abbas logistic warship, was dispatched to the Gulf of Aden and the high seas late July to protect the country's cargo ships and oil tankers against pirates.

The fleet of warships has escorted 670 military and cargo ships by now and has identified and traced trans-regional vessels and aircraft.

Iran's 30th flotilla of warships ended its mission in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean and returned home in July.

The Iranian Navy has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008, when Somali raiders hijacked the Iranian-chartered cargo ship, MV Delight, off the coast of Yemen.

According to UN Security Council resolutions, different countries can send their warships to the Gulf of Aden and coastal waters of Somalia against the pirates and even with prior notice to Somali government enter the territorial waters of that country in pursuit of Somali sea pirates.

The Gulf of Aden - which links the Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea - is an important energy corridor, particularly because Persian Gulf oil is shipped to the West via the Suez Canal.

Argentine groups sue Israel over Gaza war crimes

Source : http://en.alalam.ir/news/1630141

A lawsuit has been filed against the Israeli regime by actors, activists, politicians and pro-Palestinian solidarity groups in Argentina, a statement released by the Palestinian embassy in Buenos Aires said.

The legal case was brought before the federal court of justice on Saturday in Argentine city of Cordoba.

The case was named "Lawsuit against the Authorities of Israel for Committing Crimes against Humanity and Genocide against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip."

Journalist Serkhio Ortiz, head of the Argentinean committee of honoring the missing and victims, actor Juan Jose-Tutu, and singer and actress Mara Santosho, were among the people who signed the case.

The signatories demanded in their legal suit for the issuance of an international arrest warrant against Israeli figures through the Interpol and forcing the Zionist regime to compensate for the human and material losses that it had inflicted on the Palestinian population during its brutal war against Gaza.

Palestinians begin documentation of Zionist regimeˈs crimes in Gaza

Source : http://www.irna.ir/en/News

General Director of Al Mezan Center for Human Rights Issam Younis told IRNA if Palestinians make no serious and legal move against atrocities committed by the Zionists against the defenseless people of Gaza, then they should be waiting for more crimes to be made by the Zionists in the future.

Al Mezan is a non-governmental organization based in the Jabalia Palestinian refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. Its declared goals are: To promote and protect human rights in the OPT and especially in the Gaza Strip with a focus on economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR) and to work towards the realization of Palestinians’ individual and collective human rights.

Younis said the documentation would be prepared in two months with the help of two other Palestinian centers for human rights.

If Palestinians do nothing about Zionist regime's brutal atrocities, their future would be worse than their present, Younis told IRNA in a recent exclusive interview.

The lawyer who is educated in the Theory and Practice of Human Rights, added the unlimited support of the international community for the Zionist regime has encouraged it to carry out three major wars against Palestinians during the past six years.

Younis has lost four members of his family in the latest Israeli invasion on Gaza which ended on August 26 with an open-ended ceasefire brokered by Egypt.

Egypt has brokered a number of ceasefires between the Zionist regime and Palestinians including one on 5 August, during which all Zionist troops were withdrawn from the Gaza Strip.

Younis stressed bringing legal, political and diplomatic prosecutions to regional and international courts against crimes of the Zionist regime would help stop its carnage against Palestinians.

He also criticized the silence of certain Arab and Islamic states over Israel's atrocities against Palestinians noting that Palestinians have no choice but to follow up in person the case of Israeli crimes at the international tribunals.

Israel’ to Evacuate Galilee As Next War Starts for Fear of Hezbollah Occupation

Source : http://www.almanar.com.lb/english

The Zionist Channel 2 broadcast a report titled "Lebanon Third War" in which it warns the Israelis of the heavy prices and the massive destruction that would result from any war against Hezbollah.

"Hezbollah will strike any position across the occupied Palestinian territories, and this will impose on the Israelis to evacuate the northern settlements in Galilee, for fear of Hezbollah occupation."

The Israeli Channel interviewed the commander of Zionist Hiram brigade, Colonel Dan Goldvos, who said that Hezbollah possesses unprecedented and sophisticated military capacities as well as weaponry, calling on the entity to prepare seriously for the coming war.

Goldvos noted that Hezbollah possesses over 100,000 rockets and that some of them are long-range and may carry up to over a ton of explosive materials.

The Israeli officer added that any war against Hezbollah will not similar to the recent one against Gaza, asserting that the party will fight very fiercely and will use devastating weaponry.

'Israel' has to be able to protect its vital facilities and to evacuate the settlements for fear of a Hezbollah decision to occupy Galilee, he pointed out.

Goldvos also noted that the "Iron Dome" anti-missile system will not be able to encounter Hezbollah rocketry threat.

Commenting on the threat which Hezbollah tunnels pose, the commander of Zionist Hiram brigade said that those tunnels frighten both the Israeli military units and the settlers in Galilee.

Iran orders NATO plane to land over flight plan error

Source : http://english.al-akhbar.com/content

A NATO charter plane carrying 100 people including US government contractors out of Afghanistan was ordered to land in southern Iran because of errors in its flight plan, a Tehran-based official said Saturday.

The rare incident prompted a flurry of reaction in the United States since a number of Americans were on board the plane, but the problem was solved and the aircraft headed on to Dubai, its original destination, after a few hours on the ground.

"We realized that the flight information was incorrect and to be sure there was no problem, we asked to pilot to land," said Mohammad Ali Ilkhani, head of the Iranian Airports Organization.

Flight FZ 4359, operated by Fly Dubai, landed at an airport in Bandar Abbas, a port city on the Gulf. The plane had earlier left Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, US officials said on Friday.

The State Department quickly refuted US media reports that Iran had scrambled fighter jets and forced the charter plane to land.

Ilkhani said the plane was asked to land because it was in Iranian airspace and there was a problem with its route information, and that airport officials had not been aware that Americans were on board.

"We interviewed the pilot and verified his flight documents. The pilot acknowledged there had been errors. He was then allowed to leave," Ilkhani said.

After several hours on the ground, the plane was back in the air, deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said separately.

It was not immediately clear who was on board the Fly Dubai plane, but defense officials confirmed it had been chartered by the US-led NATO International Security Assistance Force.

It was not disclosed if it was carrying any US troops flying from the sprawling Bagram military air base just outside the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Officials confirmed however that there were American citizens as well as other US government contractors of different nationalities on board.

NATO and Georgia to Set up Training Center for Terrorist

Source : http://www.eurasianet.org/node

Georgian officials are sounding upbeat notes over a decision by NATO that seems to accelerate efforts to bring Tbilisi into the alliance. From Tbilisi’s perspective, NATO offered Georgia a package of measures at a September 4-5 summit in the United Kingdom that could potentially make the country's full membership a reality in the not-too-distant future.

"Today we agreed on a substantive package of measures for Georgia that will help it advance in its preparations towards NATO membership," NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen tweeted on September 5.

Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania said that the package included a commitment to create a training center for NATO members and allies in Georgia.

Georgia has long sought membership in both NATO and the European Union. While wanting to encourage Georgia’s membership bid, NATO has tread cautiously on the issue out of an apparent concern not to rile Russia. Georgia and Russia fought a five-day war in 2008, and portions of Georgian territory remain occupied by Russian armed forces. Russia’s actions in Ukraine are prompting NATO to re-evaluate its relations with the Kremlin.

Though satisfied with the steps taken by NATO at its UK summit, Georgian officials voiced an intention to press for a formal membership invitation at the Atlantic alliance’s next gathering in 2015. "We hope that the next summit is going to be an expansion summit where Georgia will be granted membership," Alasania said at the Atlantic Council's Future Leaders' Meeting.

Putin may have been right about Syria all along

Source : http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/putin-may-have-been-right-about-syria-all-along-9688838.html

What a difference a year makes. Around this time last year, the West was gearing up for military action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who was accused of carrying out chemical weapons attacks on his own people. That intervention never came to pass, not least because domestic public opinion in countries such as Britain and the US was opposed to further entanglements in the Middle East.

Now, the US is contemplating extending air strikes on Isis militants operating in Iraq and Syria – fighters belonging to a terrorist organisation that is leading the war against Assad. Isis’s territorial gains in Iraq and the continued repression and slaughter of religious minorities there and in Syria have rightly triggered global condemnation.

The irony of the moment is tragic. But to some, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Many cautioned against the earlier insistence of the Obama administration (as well as other governments) that Assad must go, fearing what would take hold in the vacuum. One of those critics happened to be Russian President Vladimir Putin, who warned against US intervention in Syria in a New York Times op-ed last September.

He wrote: “A strike would increase violence and unleash a new wave of terrorism. It could undermine multilateral efforts to resolve the Iranian nuclear problem and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and further destabilise the Middle East and North Africa. It could throw the entire system of international law and order out of balance.”

Some of the crises Putin catalogued have worsened anyway, but his insistence was couched in a reading of the conflict in Syria that is more cold-blooded than the view initially held by some in Washington. “Syria is not witnessing a battle for democracy, but an armed conflict between government and opposition in a multi-religious country,” he wrote, suggesting that the nominally secular Assad regime, despite its misdeeds, was a stabilising force preferable to what could possibly replace it.

Putin decried the growing Islamist cadres in the Syrian rebels’ ranks: “Mercenaries from Arab countries fighting there, and hundreds of militants from Western countries and even Russia, are an issue of our deep concern. Might they not return to our countries with experience acquired in Syria?”

That is a concern publicly shared now by US and European officials, who are alarmed by the considerable presence of European nationals among Isis forces. A British jihadist who spoke with a London accent is believed to have carried out the shocking execution of American  journalist James Foley.

That western attention has shifted so dramatically from the murders carried out by the Assad regime to those carried out by the militants fighting it is a sign of the overwhelming complexity of the war, which is collapsing borders and shaking up politics across the Middle East.

Nor is it necessarily vindication for Putin. His solemnizing over the integrity of international systems is hard to take seriously considering his controversial annexation of sovereign Ukrainian territory in March and continued obstruction of a diplomatic resolution to the crisis in the UN Security Council.

In March 2011, Syrian protesters took to the streets. Their largely peaceful  demonstrations were met by violent crackdowns by state security forces. Eventually, the upheaval turned into a full-blown sectarian civil war that has claimed the lives of at least 191,000, according to the UN last week.

Some in Washington argue that if only Obama had started arming and empowering the “moderate” Syrian opposition sooner, the extremist forces now in the news would not wield such influence and power. But it’s hard to imagine any scenario where more direct US involvement in the Syrian conflict, aimed at toppling Assad, would not somehow also play into the hands of the Islamist factions.

But it’s worth considering what Putin’s government insisted not long after the violence began. In his op-ed, he reminded readers that from “the outset, Russia has advocated peaceful dialogue enabling Syrians to develop a compromise plan for their own future”. That “plan for the future”, the Russians insisted, had to involve talks between the government and the opposition, something the opposition rejected totally at the time.

Paul Street: ISIL Is A Frankenstein Created Largely by US Imperialism

Source : http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.aspx?nn=13930609001300

TEHRAN (FNA)- Paul Street, American journalist, believes that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is in fact a Frankenstein created largely by US imperialism, and that the menace posed by the ISIL and the resurgence of Takfiri-Salafi militancy is not limited to Syria and Iraq.

"The peril ISIL poses to what has always been Washington’s primary concern in the region – the great "strategic prize" of Middle Eastern oil – raises the specter of the US having to re-send large military deployments to the world’s energy heartland. And that is something US policymakers do not relish since they know by now that it has strong potential to make the situation worse. Smart US planners have learned that direct US military intervention fuels "anti-Americanism" and strengthens the jihadist movement in the long run. The US prefers to dominate the region through proxies (including Saudi Arabia, the Arab Emirates, and Israel) and divide-and-rule," said Street in an exclusive interview with Fars News Agency.

He believes that the US, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan pretty much manufactured the global Jihadist network in order to bloody the nose of the Soviet Union in the late 1970s and 1980s. The ISIL is of course an offshoot of Al-Qaeda, itself largely a product of that US Cold War policy.

Fars News Agency has conducted an interview with Paul Street, an independent researcher, journalist, historian, author and speaker based in Illinois, in an attempt to study the claim by the US authorities that they are combating ISIL and terrorism in the Middle East.

Paul Street is the author of numerous books including "Empire and Inequality: America and the World Since 9/11", "Segregated Schools: Educational Apartheid in the Post-Civil Rights Era", and "Racial Oppression in the Global Metropolis: a Living Black Chicago History".

Street’s essays, articles, reviews, interviews, and commentaries have appeared in numerous outlets, including CounterPunch, Truthout, the Chicago Tribune, Capital City Times, In These Times, and Chicago History.

Street’s writings, research findings, and commentary have been featured in a large number and wide variety of media venues, including The New York Times, CNN, Al Jazeera, the Chicago Tribune, WGN (Chicago/national), WLS (ABC-Chicago), Fox News, and the Chicago Sun Times.

What follows is the text of FNA’s interview with Paul Street:

Q: Would you Kindly explain the role of the US in forming and bringing the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) into existence. Is this a plot orchestrated by the US and its allies? If so, why?

A: The ISIL is in fact a Frankenstein created largely by the US imperialism. Still, it’s too much and far too simple to say that it is plot or a conspiracy orchestrated by the US and its allies. To say that it is to exaggerate the US power and to unduly deny agency to Sunni Islamists. It is also to misconstrue US-imperial aims in the Middle East. The menace posed by the ISIL and the resurgence of Jihadism is not limited to Syria and Iraq. It also t

Russian Foreign Minister: 'Latin America Will Be One of the Pillars of the New World Economic Order'

Source : http://larouchepac.com

"Latin America will be one of the pillars of the New World Economic Order," said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, in an interview with Russia Today published on Aug. 27.

Reflecting the rapidity with which the BRICS development paradigm is advancing, and Latin America's role within it, Lavrov pointed out that Russia is cooperating with all the nations of Latin America, but particularly with Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, Chile, Peru, and Venezuela. Latin America is a vibrant region, he said, which is moving toward the creation of a multipolar world.

Lavrov referenced Russian President Vladimir Putin's "historic" tour of Brazil, Argentina, and Cuba at the time of the mid-July BRICS summit, his participation in the summit itself, and his meetings with twelve Latin American leaders. As part of Putin's "broad program," Lavrov underscored, he discussed such crucial topics as energy, transportation, defense, aerospace, and heavy industry, "areas of great interest to all."

Look at the variety of regional organizations that exist in the region, the Foreign Minister pointed out, all of which are involved in processes of economic integration. "There isn't one country that doesn't belong, in one way or another, to at least one integration organization, and," he emphasized, "we have relations with each one of these alliances, and with all of the countries, without exception, of Latin America."

From now on, Lavrov stressed, both Russia and its Latin American partners will be meeting on an official basis much more frequently, recalling that Russia has formed state-to-state trade and cooperation commission with many of these nations.

Nicaraguan Inter-Oceanic Canal ]'Will Produce a Radical Change in the Economic Structure of the Caribbean Basin'

A national mobilization is underway to rally the people of Nicaragua around the Great Nicaraguan Inter-Oceanic Canal project. Officials from the government and HKND, the private Chinese company holding the concession to build and operate the canal, held over a dozen meetings and discussions across Nicaragua in the course of July, briefing thousands of citizens and business and community leaders, and answering their questions and concerns about the plans and prospects for this great endeavor. The next step, census-taking of the lands and people along the projected route who may have to be relocated, began this week, a necessary, but sensitive step so that construction can begin as planned in December 2014.

Forget the continuing silly hype pouring out of international and Nicaraguan opposition press, that the canal project is somehow dubious because of "the little known" HKND company and its owner. HKND's partners in the project are some of China's most advanced water management, rail, civil aviation and port design companies. Responsibility for designing the canal route proper, for example, is held by the Changjiang Institute of Survey, Planning, Design and Research. That is the institute which was responsible for designing China's huge Three Gorges Dam project, and it is now responsible for the middle section of China's great South Water North project. This is an institute which knows its stuff! China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group is the lead design contractor for HKND for the project, as well as being in charge of the road sub-project design; Civil Aviation Engineering Consulting Company of China has responsibility for the design of the airport sub-project; and CCCC Second Harbor Consultants has responsibility for the design of the ports sub-project.

Excitement is slowly growing throughout Central America as the project takes shape as a reality, although fear continues in Panama that this means "competition" for their canal expansion project. That fear was answered nicely on August 8 by a regular journalist for Cuba's Juventud Rebelde daily, Rene Tamayo, in his article, "Navigating the Great Nicaraguan Canal." Tamayo laid out a perspective for the entire Central American-Caribbean Basin to be transformed into a hub of world development by developing numerous cross-isthmus endeavors.

When both the Nicaraguan and expanded Panama canals are fully operational in the next decade, the increase in the commerce going in both directions between Asia, the Americas and the Atlantic, and Europe, "will produce a radical change in the economic structure of the Caribbean basin. And it won't be only in the turn-over of the ports and air and ground transportation, but also in manufacturing for export and import substitution, agriculture, tourism, new technologies," he wrote.

Countries like Cuba, with its Mariel Special Development Zone and China's agreement to build a multipurpose terminal at Santiago de Cuba's port, are gearing up for this new perspective. The same is happening in the half-dozen megaports in the region. Mexico and Colombia, and the Central American nations in-between, are each drawing up plans to build "dry canals" —road or rail— across the isthmus. Whichever of these eventually gets built, will generate "a regional industrial, agricultural and services synergy from which the people and the economy will benefit. A hopeful panorama."

Tamayo went further, taking on the "geopolitical" talk coming from the international press, and undoubtedly being discussed behind closed doors. Such talk is to be expected, he wrote; "however the economic potential of this route will absorb most of the frictions which it will produce," he wrote. "China is the principal investor; Russia will participate, but the United States is also interested. I think the three countries, when the time comes, will say: 'this is not personal; this is business.' The alarmists ought to take this into account." A most interesting assessment coming from Cuba.

Bolivia declares Israel a terrorist state

Source : http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=717063

LA PAZ (AFP) -- Bolivia on Wednesday renounced a visa exemption agreement with Israel in protest over its offensive in Gaza, and declared it a terrorist state.

President Evo Morales announced the move during a talk with a group of educators in the city of Cochabamba.

It "means, in other words, we are declaring (Israel) a terrorist state," he said.

The treaty has allowed Israelis to travel freely to Bolivia without a visa since 1972.

Morales said the Gaza offensive shows "that Israel is not a guarantor of the principles of respect for life and the elementary precepts of rights that govern the peaceful and harmonious coexistence of our international community."

More than two weeks of fighting in Gaza have left 1,300 dead and 6,000 wounded amid an intense Israeli air and ground campaign.

In the latest development, 16 people were killed after two Israeli shells slammed into a United Nations school, drawing international protests.

Bolivia broke off diplomatic relations with Israel in 2009 over a previous military operation in Gaza.

In mid-July, Morales filed a request with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to prosecute Israel for "crimes against humanity."

Iran to "accelerate" arming of Palestinians after Israeli drone downed

Source : http://english.al-akhbar.com/content

Tehran will "accelerate" arming Palestinians in the occupied West Bank in retaliation for Israel deploying a spy drone over Iran, which was shot down, a military commander said on Monday.

"We will accelerate the arming of the West Bank and we reserve the right to give any response," said General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh, commander of aerial forces of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, in a statement on their official website sepahnews.com.

The warning comes a day after the Guards said they had brought down an Israeli stealth drone above the Natanz uranium enrichment site in the centre of the country.

"A spy drone of the Zionist regime (Israel) was brought down by a missile... This stealth drone was trying to approach the Natanz nuclear zone," the corps said in a statement on epahnews.com.

Iran shoots down Israeli spy drone near Natanz nuclear facility

Source : http://www.presstv.ir/detai

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has shot down an Israeli spy drone over the Iranian sky before the unmanned aerial vehicle reached Natanz nuclear facility.

The IRGC’s Aerospace Force has intercepted and shot down an Israeli spy drone, the IRGC announced in a statement on Sunday.

It added that the stealth and radar-evading spy drone intended to reach the nuclear facility in Natanz, but was targeted by a surface-to-air missile before it reached the area.

“This mischievous act once again reveals the adventurist nature of the Zionist regime [of Israel] and added another black page to this fake and warmongering regime’s file which is full of crimes,” the IRGC statement said.

The statement emphasized that along with other Armed Forces, the IRGC is fully and strongly prepared to defend the Islamic Republic’s territory and airspace against any aggression and reserves the right to respond in kind to such moves.

Iran’s nuclear facilities have always been a regular target for espionage activities by US and Israeli secret services, which have at times used drones for this purpose. However, all efforts made to this end have been successfully thwarted by the Iranian military forces.

On December 4, 2011, the Iranian military’s electronic warfare unit announced that it had successfully downed the American RQ-170 reconnaissance and spy drone in the eastern part of Iran with minimal damage.

The RQ-170, an unmanned stealth aircraft designed and developed by the Lockheed Martin Company, had crossed into Iran’s airspace over the border with Afghanistan.

The drone was one of America's most advanced spy aircraft and its loss was considered a major embarrassment for Washington.

Iran 'sent soldiers to fight back Jalawla, Diyala province

Source : http://indian.ruvr.ru/news

Hundreds of Iranian soldiers have taken part in a joint operation inside Iraq with Kurdish forces to retake a town held by the Islamic State Al Jazeera reports quoting security sources.

It is believed to be the first time that Iranian troops have been directly involved in the fighting against the Sunni rebel group on this scale.

Hundreds of soldiers crossed the border on Friday in a joint operation with Kurdish Peshmerga forces to take back Jalawla in Diyala province, an official Kurdish source who asked not to be identified told Al Jazeera.

He said the Iranian forces retreated back across the border early on Saturday.

Iranian denial

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham dismissed the reports of any Iranian military presence in Iraq.

According to the official IRNA news agency, she said Tehran "has a close watch on field developments in Iraq sensitively with regards to mutual cooperation and international commitments and takes into consideration cooperation with the Iraqi government".

China Requests that US Stop Surveilling its Territory - Reports

Source : http://en.ria.ru/politics

MOSCOW, August 24 (RIA Novosti) - Beijing demanded that Washington cease its close watch of Chinese territory and create a plausible atmosphere for the development of bilateral ties, Xinhua news agency reported Sunday.

On Saturday, BBC reported that the United States had accused China of reckless mid-air intercept, where a Chinese Su-27 plane came dangerously close to a US Boeing P-8 Poseidon, the fourth such incident in the past five months. The Pentagon said such a maneuver contradicted international law and was "very dangerous."

China's Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun responded by saying that a US anti-submarine aircraft flew 22 kilometers (13.7 miles) from the Island of Hainan observing the territory, which prompted China to launch the fighter jet to investigate the target.

Reacting to the US criticism, the Chinese ministry spokesman said Washington's accusations had "absolutely no ground," as the Chinese pilot behaved professionally and observed a safe distance to the US plane.

"The reason for accidents is mass and large-scale surveillance of China's territory by the United States, which puts the aerial and sea security of both sides," Yujun was quotes as saying by the agency.

Washington has voiced its position on the disputed South China Sea islands. Despite the disagreement of its neighbors and contradictions with the United States, China continues to claim 90 percent of the sea, which contains large oil and gas reserves, as well as fish.

Moscow Slams NATO Over Rasmussen’s Statements About Russian Humanitarian Convoy

Source : http://en.ria.ru/politics

MOSCOW, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Foreign Ministry said the statement of NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen that Russian humanitarian aid convoy entered Ukraine without Kiev’s consent and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) involvement, is another lie.

“In his statement, filled with allegations, Rasmussen claimed that Russian humanitarian aid convoy entered Ukraine ‘without entering the consent of the Ukrainian authorities and without any involvement of the International Committee of the Red Cross.’ This is another lie,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement Saturday.

Rasmussen said Friday that by entering Ukraine, Russia’s humanitarian aid convoy, Moscow breached its international commitments, including those it recently made in Berlin and Geneva.

“I condemn the entry of a Russian so-called humanitarian convoy into Ukrainian territory without the consent of the Ukrainian authorities and without any involvement of the International Committee of the Red Cross,” Rasmussen said. “This is a blatant breach of Russia’s international commitments, including those made recently in Berlin and Geneva, and a further violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty by Russia.”

“If NATO really wants to know the truth behind the Russian humanitarian mission, including the degree of ICRC’s ‘involvement’ or ‘non-involvement’, we recommend that they contact [ICRC] headquarters,” the ministry said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reminded that Moscow received a formal agreement from Kiev authorities for the passage of the humanitarian convoy through the Ukrainian border on August 12.

“We act fully in line with norms of the international humanitarian law,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Friday.

On August 14, the trucks with Russian humanitarian aid arrived at the border, but Ukraine began customs clearance only on August 21.

Venezuela slams US racism

Via : http://axisoflogic.com

Venezuela's communication minister has stated the world "must know" about the extent of racism in the United States, arguing the fatal shooting of Michael Brown was not an isolated incident.

Communication minister Delcy Rodríguez has condemned racial “discrimination” in the United States.

Responding to the police shooting of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown, Rodriguez said the incident was symptomatic of a broader problem.

“In the United States more than one third of the African American population has experienced some form of discrimination,” Rodriguez stated.

"The death of Michael Brown was not an isolated incident,” she said.

Rodriguez pointed to other cases of black men being gunned down, such as the 2012 shooting of Trayvon Martin. Former neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman was acquitted of charges stemming from the fatal shooting in July 2013.

Brown was shot by a white police officer on August 9, 2014.

There have been nightly demonstrations since the fatal police shooting, and a wave of public outrage against the killing.

Local residents are demanding justice for the killing and are protesting what they say is the racially biased and repressive police tactics by the local department.

Thousands are expected to gather across the country on Thursday as part of a nationwide series of protests, in at least 37 cities.

“The world must know the innumerable cases of abuse and killings of African American citizens in the United States,” Rodriguez stated.

The Venezuelan minister's statement follows criticism of Ferguson authorities' handling of protests in the wake of Brown's death by the United Nations Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay.

Earlier this week, Pillay said the clashes between police and protestors in Ferguson, Missouri are reminiscent of the racial violence in her native South Africa during apartheid.

“These scenes are familiar to me and privately I was thinking that there are many parts of the United States where apartheid is flourishing,” Pillay stated.

NATO’s Terror Hordes in Iraq a Pretext for Syria Invasion

Source : http://journal-neo.org

Rroads lead to Baghdad and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is following them all, north from Syria and Turkey to south. Reading Western headlines, two fact-deficient narratives have begun gaining traction. The first is that this constitutes a “failure” of US policy in the Middle East, an alibi as to how the US and its NATO partners should in no way be seen as complicit in the current coordinated, massive, immensely funded and heavily armed terror blitzkrieg toward Baghdad. The second is how ISIS appears to have “sprung” from the sand dunes and date trees as a nearly professional military traveling in convoys of matching Toyota trucks without explanation.

In actuality, ISIS is the product of a joint NATO-GCC conspiracy stretching back as far as 2007 where US-Saudi policymakers sought to ignite a region-wide sectarian war to purge the Middle East of Iran’s arch of influence stretching from its borders, across Syria and Iraq, and as far west as Lebanon and the coast of the Mediterranean. ISIS has been harbored, trained, armed, and extensively funded by a coalition of NATO and Persian Gulf states within Turkey’s (NATO territory) borders and has launched invasions into northern Syria with, at times, both Turkish artillery and air cover.  The most recent example of this was the cross-border invasion by Al Qaeda into Kasab village, Latikia province in northwest Syria.

In March, ISIS withdrew its terror battalions from Latikia and Idlib provinces and repositioned them in the east of Syria, now clearly in preparations for invading northern Iraq. The Daily Star reported in a March 2014 article titled, “Al-Qaeda splinter group in Syria leaves two provinces: activists,” that:

On Friday, ISIS – which alienated many rebels by seizing territory and killing rival commanders – finished withdrawing from the Idlib and Latakia provinces and moved its forces toward the eastern Raqqa province and the eastern outskirts of the northern city of Aleppo, activists said.

The alleged territorial holdings of ISIS cross over both Syrian and Iraqi borders meaning that any campaign to eradicate them from Iraqi territory can easily spill over into Syria’s borders. And that is exactly the point. With ISIS having ravaged Mosul, Iraq near the Turkish border and moving south in a terror blitzkrieg now threatening the Iraqi capital of Baghdad itself, the Iraqi government is allegedly considering calling for US and/or NATO assistance to break the terror wave. Adding to the pretext, ISIS, defying any sound tactical or strategic thinking, has seized a Turkish consulate in Mosul, taking over 80 Turkish hostages - serendipitous giving Turkey not only a new pretext to invade northern Iraq as it has done many times in pursuit of alleged Kurdish militants, but to invade Syrian territory where ISIS is also based.

It had been revealed that NATO has been planning a false flag attack against Turkey to justify the Turkish invasion of northern Syria, the International Business Times reported in its article, “Turkey YouTube Ban: Full Transcript of Leaked Syria ‘War’ Conversation Between Erdogan Officials.” It released the full transcript of a leaked conversation between the head of Turkish intelligence Hakan Fidan and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu. The Times reported:

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ban of YouTube occurred after a leaked conversation between Head of Turkish Intelligence Hakan Fidan and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu that he wanted removed from the video-sharing website.

The leaked call details Erdogan’s thoughts that an attack on Syria “must be seen as an opportunity for us [Turkey]“.In the conversation, intelligence chief Fidan says that he will send four men from Syria to attack Turkey to “make up a cause of war”.The report would also state:

In the leaked video, Fidan is discussing with Davutoğlu, Güler and other officials a possible operation within Syria to secure the tomb of Suleyman Shah, grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman empire.

Instead of four men carrying out a false flag to secure a tomb, it appears now that an entire mercenary army will be used as a pretext to secure all of northern Iraq and eastern Syria.

Tales of ISIS looting armories, vehicle depots, and banks are being carefully planted throughout the Western media in an attempt to portray the invasion as a terrorist uprising, sustaining itself on plundered supplies, weapons, and cash. In reality, ISIS already possessed all that it needed before beginning its campaign from Syrian and Turkish territory.

The International Business Times in its article, “Mosul Seized: Jihadis Loot $429m from City’s Central Bank to Make Isis World’s Richest Terror Force,” claims:

The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (Isis) has become the richest terror group ever after looting 500 billion Iraqi dinars – the equivalent of $429m (£256m) – from Mosul’s central bank, according to the regional governor.

Nineveh governor Atheel al-Nujaifi confirmed Kurdish televison reports that Isis militants had stolen millions from numerous banks across Mosul. A large quantity of gold bullion is also believed to have been stolen.Following the siege of the country’s second city, the bounty collected by the group has left it richer than al-Qaeda itself and as wealthy as small nations such as Tonga, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands and the Falkland Islands. This cover story is the latest in a long propaganda campaign designed to cover up the extensively documented state sponsorship of ISIS and other Al Qaeda franchises by the United States, NATO, and the Persian Gulf monarchies. Previous attempts to explain why alleged “moderates” being funded billions by the West were being displaced by Al Qaeda in Syria have included claims that “Twitter donations” were eclipsing the combined aid provided by the US, EU, NATO, and Persian Gulf states.

Published in 2007 – a full 4 years before the 2011 “Arab Spring” would begin – Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh’s New Yorker article titled, “”The Redirection: Is the Administration’s new policy benefiting our enemies in the war on terrorism?” stated specifically (emphasis added):

To undermine Iran, which is predominantly Shiite, the Bush Administration has decided, in effect, to reconfigure its priorities in the Middle East. In Lebanon, the Administration has coöperated with Saudi Arabia’s government, which is Sunni, in clandestine operations that are intended to weaken Hezbollah, the Shiite organization that is backed by Iran. The U.S. has also taken part in clandestine operations aimed at Iran and its ally Syria. A by-product of these activities has been the bolstering of Sunni extremist groups that espouse a militant vision of Islam and are hostile to America and sympathetic to Al QaedaThroughout the Syrian conflict, which began in 2011, the West and its regional partners have sent billions in cash, weapons, and equipment. In the March 2013 Telegraph article titled, “US and Europe in ‘major airlift of arms to Syrian rebels through Zagreb’,” it is reported:

It claimed 3,000 tons of weapons dating back to the former Yugoslavia have been sent in 75 planeloads from Zagreb airport to the rebels, largely via Jordan since November

The story confirmed the origins of ex-Yugoslav weapons seen in growing numbers in rebel hands in online videos, as described last month by The Daily Telegraph and other newspapers, but suggests far bigger quantities than previously suspected.

The shipments were allegedly paid for by Saudi Arabia at the bidding of the United States, with assistance on supplying the weapons organised through Turkey and Jordan, Syria’s neighbours. But the report added that as well as from Croatia, weapons came “from several other European countries including Britain”, without specifying if they were British-supplied or British-procured arms.

British military advisers however are known to be operating in countries bordering Syria alongside French and Americans, offering training to rebel leaders and former Syrian army officers. The Americans are also believed to be providing training on securing chemical weapons sites inside Syria.

Additionally, The New York Times in its article, “Arms Airlift to Syria Rebels Expands, With C.I.A. Aid,” admits that:

With help from the C.I.A., Arab governments and Turkey have sharply increased their military aid to Syria’s opposition fighters in recent months, expanding a secret airlift of arms and equipment for the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, according to air traffic data, interviews with officials in several countries and the accounts of rebel commanders.

The airlift, which began on a small scale in early 2012 and continued intermittently through last fall, expanded into a steady and much heavier flow late last year, the data shows. It has grown to include more than 160 military cargo flights by Jordanian, Saudi and Qatari military-style cargo planes landing at Esenboga Airport near Ankara, and, to a lesser degree, at other Turkish and Jordanian airports.

With the pledge of fresh aid, the total amount of nonlethal assistance from the United States to the coalition and civic groups inside the country is $250 million. During the meeting here, Mr. Kerry urged other nations to step up their assistance, with the objective of providing $1 billion in international aid. The US has also admitted that it is now officially arming and equipping terrorists inside of Syria. The Washington Post’s article, “U.S. weapons reaching Syrian rebels,” reported:

The CIA has begun delivering weapons to rebels in Syria, ending months of delay in lethal aid that had been promised by the Obama administration, according to U.S. officials and Syrian figures. The shipments began streaming into the country over the past two weeks, along with separate deliveries by the State Department of vehicles and other gear — a flow of material that marks a major escalation of the U.S. role in Syria’s civil war.

Click on the picture to enlarge it

The Western media and the governments providing them their talking points now expect the general public to believe that somehow “Twitter donations” and “bank robberies” have managed to outpace this unprecedented multinational logistical feat and give Al Qaeda the edge over the West’s nonexistent “moderate” forces in Syria and give rise to phantom terrorist legions capable of seizing entire provinces across multiple national borders. The evidence simply doesn’t add up.

Combined with reports from the US Army’s West Point Countering Terrorism Center, “Bombers, Bank Accounts and Bleedout: al-Qa’ida’s Road In and Out of Iraq,” and “Al-Qa’ida’s Foreign Fighters in Iraq,” it is clear that Iraq’s Al Qaeda/ISIS legions were created, funded, and armed by Persian Gulf states and are augmented with foreign fighters drawn from Libya’s terror epicenter of Benghazi, and Saudi Arabia in particular. These legions have been in operation in one form or another since they were first created by the US CIA, Saudi Arabia and Pakistani intelligence during the 1980′s to combat Soviet forces in Afghanistan.

The alleged territory of ISIS overlaps the Iraqi-Syrian border constituting a region nearly the size of Syria itself. With Baghdad asking for foreign intervention, and ISIS giving NATO the perfect pretext to do so by seizing a Turkish consulate in Mosul, making the case for (re)invading Iraq may be feasible. With the Western media capitalizing on ISIS’ notorious brutality, including mass beheadings and hundreds of thousands of civilians fleeing before them, a demonstrable campaign to sway public opinion toward intervention is clearly under way.

Invading northern Iraq will allow NATO to then justify cross-border operations into eastern Syria. In reality what NATO will be doing is establishing their long desired “buffer zone” where terrorists can launch attacks deeper and more effectively into Syrian territory. With western Syria returning to peace and order after a series of victories for the Syrian government, the last front NATO’s proxy forces have is Al Qaeda’s arch of terror running along Turkey’s border and now, across eastern Syria and northern Iraq. NATO’s presence in northern Iraq would also provide an obstacle for Iranian-Syrian trade and logistics.

The idea of such a buffer zone has been in the works since at least March 2012, where the idea was proposed by the US corporate-financier funded Brookings Institution in their “Middle East Memo #21″ “Assessing Options for Regime Change” where it stated specifically (emphasis added):

“An alternative is for diplomatic efforts to focus first on how to end the violence and how to gain humanitarian access, as is being done under Annan’s leadership. This may lead to the creation of safe-havens and humanitarian corridors, which would have to be backed by limited military power. This would, of course, fall short of U.S. goals for Syria and could preserve Asad in power. From that starting point, however, it is possible that a broad coalition with the appropriate international mandate could add further coercive action to its efforts.”

Through Iraq, NATO has used its terrorist proxies to create a pretext to put this “buffer zone” strategy back into motion. The prospect of the US, NATO, or the Persian Gulf states delivering Iraq from ISIS is an ironic tragedy – as definitive evidence reveals ISIS’ brutal incursion was of this collective coalition’s own doing to begin with, and for its own insidious ends. Instead, a joint Iranian-Iraqi-Syrian anti-terror campaign should be conducted to corner and crush NATO’s terrorist mercenary expeditionary force once and for all.

Workers and youth in Berlin: “What is taking place in Ferguson is war”

Source : http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2014/08/21/berl-a21.html

German media has prominently featured the recent events in Ferguson, with a number of papers noting that the source of unrest in Missouri is growing social inequality. The media and leading layers of the political elite are concerned that the civil war-like response of the US police forces, which have trampled on democratic rights, has brought the true state of class relations in the United States and internationally to the fore.

On Tuesday, Germany’s leading business paper Handelsblatt wrote that the racist form of police violence was in fact an expression of social conflicts. Scenes similar to those in Ferguson could be replicated throughout the United States. “The war began in Ferguson,” the newspaper writes. “If counter measures are not taken, then it is only a question of when, before Ferguson is replicated everywhere.”

Workers and young people in Germany were shocked at the news from Missouri. “I have followed the news from Ferguson on television,” said Mark, who is studying mathematics in Berlin. “I always had an image of America as a land of democracy and press freedom. After all that I have now seen, this image is destroyed or at least profoundly shaken. When one reads the reports on the activities of the secret services then it is clear that the risk of an authoritarian police state is very real.”

Markus expressed his hope that the move towards a police state could be prevented by pressure on the government, while Alex, 28, a self-employed worker, regarded the situation as much more advanced. “The media reports from Ferguson show that a police state is already in operation in the United States,” he said. “If this continues, then we will even see the emergence of fascist tendencies. I am by no means anti-American, but hope that Obama intervenes to stop it.”

Fubgena

Fubgena, a textile worker from the Berlin district of Neukölln, saw the situation differently: “Even if Obama is the first African-American president, he has not changed anything. He has done nothing to change the situation for blacks .He has not changed anything in Iraq, where it is worse than it was under Saddam Hussein, and also not in Libya, where everything is also worse. Obama has changed nothing and he cannot change anything because the rules are made by others.”

The military deployment in Ferguson reminds Fubgena of the actions of the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip: “What is taking place in Ferguson is war. You cannot use weapons against the people. And it’s happening everywhere. This is the war of the rich against the poor. The rich do what they want; the police do what they want. This is not a democracy. In a democracy such things could not take place and this is happening in America, the land of democracy.”

Another young worker from Berlin told the WSWS that the events in Ferguson recalled the wars in the Ukraine and Iraq, saying, “I’m afraid that this crisis could lead to a third world war. I have talked to my friends about it, who are of the same opinion. “

Twenty-six-year-old Sahila from Azerbaijan, who is currently studying in Poland and is in Berlin in connection with her studies, declared that the people in Ferguson were no longer prepared to tolerate the way they are treated by the authorities. The events make clear that the United States, which is often portrayed as particularly democratic, is indistinguishable from other powers. “If they (the elite) want to achieve anything they use every means to get their way,” she said.

Jonas

Jonas is 20 and studying culture and technology at the Technical University of Berlin. He is sure that scenes similar to those in Ferguson could erupt in Berlin. “Police brutality is on the agenda in Berlin,” he told WSWS reporters. Some of his friends had been assaulted by police merely because they had made disparaging comments about some officers.

There have been a number of cases of police brutality in Berlin during the past few months, in particular in connection with demonstrations against the deportation of refugees. In June, a number of videos were released showing police brutally beating up participants on demonstrations. During the same period the police established a no-go area and cordoned off entire streets surrounding a building occupied by refugees in order to prevent protests and prepare their deportation.

Donetsk Self-Defense Forces Joined by French Volunteers - Interview

MOSCOW, August 21 (RIA Novosti) - The military conflict in southeastern Ukraine has been the focus of politicians, the military and journalists around the world for almost six months now. The world is divided between supporters of Kiev’s new government and those who support the self-defense forces in the southeast.

The Western countries unanimously support the Ukrainian government economically, politically, and via the flow of information. Moreover, there are regular reports of foreign recruits from the US, Italy, Georgia and some other countries fighting in the Ukrainian army and in its National Guard.

However, even among Western countries that have been caught in an information war against  southeastern Ukraine and Russia, there is support for the self-defense troops of the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics. They are willing to lend moral support and even personally help the people of Novorossiya. Some are even eager to enlist.

Several days ago, several French volunteers contacted RIA Novosti. They’d just arrived in  southeastern Ukraine and already felt compelled to tell their first-hand stories about the civil war there to the people of France. What other reasons led them to fight for the besieged people’s republic? They told Sergei Safronov, Head of the Security Agencies Newsdesk, their reasons for taking up the fight.

First of all, please introduce yourself and tell us what brought you to Ukraine.

Guillaume: My name is Guillaume. There are four of us from France; the others are Michel, Victor and Nicolas. We are French volunteers and basically the first wave of an entire group of our fellow citizens, who are either preparing for a trip to Ukraine or are already on their way.

Are there any more French people in Donetsk?

Guillaume: No, but I hear there are some Spanish people. We haven’t seen them yet.

Did you bring a weapon? Are you from the military or are you civilians?

Guillaume: Of course we did not bring any weapons, but we received some from the militia. These are personal service firearms. We are not servicemen at all; we are civilians – basically political volunteers.

Guillaume, you still haven’t mentioned your reasons for going to Ukraine. Why are you here?

Guillaume: We support the geopolitical idea of European unity. We are both revolutionaries and traditionalists. We came to Donbas, where civilians are being killed by agents from Kiev. Those who are conducting this terrorist operation in Donbas are the henchmen of the international mafia oligarchs.
You should clearly understand it is the third world war going on. It started in Libya then moved to Syria and now to Donbas. We can see that Russia is one of a small number of countries that challenged and is almost single-handedly fighting international globalism. It is some kind of a Reconquista. We are here to help Russia in this fight.

Do you get paid?

Guillaume: No, we are not here to make money; no one pays us. Moreover, we paid quite a lot to get here.

How long do you plan to stay here?

Guillaume: For as long as it is necessary to inform the people of France about what is happening here.

Do your family and friends know where you are?

Guillaume: We told a small circle of friends. France doesn’t know we are here. France doesn’t even know that Donbas is at war. The Western media do not report anything. On the contrary, the Western media present Russia as an enemy, an aggressor, a terrorist country. They don’t say anything about the war in Ukraine.
Our presence here will allow the French to receive first-hand information.

Have you already taken part in military operations?

Guillaume: Not yet, but we are ready to take part. It is one of the reasons why we are here.

Where exactly are you?

Guillaume: We are in Donetsk, the Donetsk People’s Republic.

How do you communicate with the self-defense fighters? As far as I understand, you don’t speak Russian or Ukrainian. How do you communicate?

Guillaume: With sounds and gestures.

Good luck!

Guillaume: Merci.
